La Siesta Scorcher

La Orquidea Golf Society, August 2010.

La Orquidea Golf Society, August 2010.

In sweltering degree sunshine, La Orquidea Golf Society played La Siesta Golf Course.  Despite an early start, the heat took it’s toll with the players playing in temperatures above 36 degrees (of course, this didn’t affect anyone’s game, such is their professionalism).

Having completed the 18 holes, the group cam back to the bar to enjoy burger and chips with fried onions on the terrace.  A free jug of beer was provided by the bar to quench the thirst of a sizzling day’s golf.

The group then proceeded to discuss the finer points of the round they had played.

Unusually for La Orquidea Golf Society, there was no real ‘hot of the day’, but more than enough ‘could-haves’.

The Hamlet Shot of the Day goes to Ricky, who on the 7th, drove clear to the green, then rolled into the bunker.  Having had numerous shots in the bunker, in which the ball decided to stay, he conceded the hole.  Poor boy.

The trophy being played for was donated by Shaun and is the cause of great debate as numerous golfers desire to have their name on it.

The winner today will proudly be the first name on the trophy.

Modern diamond-shaped trophies which the winners keep, were awarded to the winner and nearest the pin.

Bottles of wine were also awarded to the winner and second place.

A course cap was the booby prize, for the lowest score of the day.

Blow-Out at Calanova

Posted by La Orquidea Golf Society. Monday, October 19, 2009.
Orquidea team was all fired up, ping clubs, gallaway balls, team shirts all at the ready for the clash of the giants at Calanovna.
All to no avail as the red hot Bunkers team regetably had to withdraw at the last min (just as well with our scores !!!)
All was not lost however, We won the trophy :-) on what turned out to be a great days golf.
The weather was just right, and only a light wind to contend with. We only lost 5 balls between the whole team, some feet at Calanova. Pete James actually went round the whole course with the same ball (Well done that man)
All team members Drove well on the day, but more putting pratice seems nessary. We are now eagarly awaiting the next (Return ???) game against Bunkers, which they shall hoist.
The challance trophy totally hand made by 2 Orquidea soicty members  ( PIC OF IT HERE), Shane & Ricky. Well done guys and thank you.
Our next game will be in mid Nov. If you would like to play please get in touch.

Society Chief Plays the Dos Leones Society

Posted by La Orquidea Golf Society. Friday, October 9, 2009.

‘The Les’ and two collegues joined Dos Leones for the day at the Calanova a few days ago.

This is a precursor for the Bunkers Challenge which will take place on the 14th of October.

‘The Les’, who is a regular member of the Dos Leones Society, will be taking advantage of the situation to play Calanova prior to the Bunker Challenge Trophy on the 14th of October.

‘The Les’ is hoping that this visit will enhance his game dramatically, giving the advantage to Bar La Orquidea in at least one of the four balls, as we all know, course knowledge is king!

Anyone wishing to play in the La Orquidea of Dos Leones Societies are, it goes without saying, welcome at all times.

So come on you future golfers, men, women and children alike.  Come and enjoy this social game with two of the best societies on the Costa.

Clash of Two Giants! La Orquidea vs Bunkers

Posted by La Orquidea Golf Society. Friday, September 18, 2009.
Clash of Two Giants!  La Orquidea vs Bunkers
Whilst enjoying a recent social few beers at Bunkers, ‘The Les’ challenged the Bunkers Bar ‘Super Eight’ and the gauntlet was thrown down that we could easilly beat this array of supposed golf stars.
The challenge was snapped up Adrian, their Golf Soc. leader, and the date is now set.
On Wednesday the 14th of October, 2009, the Calanova Golf Course will rock to the play of two of the Costa del Sol’s heavyweight Golf Societies.
The event is open to society members and the public, alike.  If you think you’re up to the challenge, give us a call.  A fantastic day out with some great golf (buggies included), chicken and chips back at the La Orquidea Clubhouse, and a night of top banter.
All for just €60.00!
This will be a great opportunity for casual players of all abilities to play competition golf with a freindly and relaxed group of keen golfers.
Prizes will be awarded for First Place, Second Place, Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive (men’s and ladies’).
We hope to make this a quarterly event, where the reputation of Calahonda and Riviera are at stake.
Come and join the La Orquidea Society, or just play for the day.  We’re always happy to welcome new guests and members.

Six of the Best Take on La Siesta

Posted by La Orquidea Golf Society. .
On an ideal (if slightly chilly) golfing day on the Costa del Sol, six members of the La Orquidea Golf Society once again played La Siesta Course in Calahonda.
Regular use of this course was demonstreated in the scores, this time round, the winning score of 36 was being really very reasoable of a handicap of 8.  (Results table below.)
Ricky was on top form with 5 Birdies (it’s his home course, mind you) and Terry was also clocking up the Birdies this time round.
Fabulous shots included The Les who, on the seventh, drove to the green and on the 9th/18th actually drove past the green, almost to the clubhouse terrace!  The only thing that spoiled the shot was long grass on the top of the hill!
Both times round on the 8th hole, Karen landed the ball square on the green in real style.
Kath Dos Leonnes missed a Birdie putt of 18 feet by the narrowest of margins, to create a Par on the third hole.
First timer, Karen, one of two ladies playing, had a great round fining her feet very qwuickly (that’s another one hooked)
In the party were two of Dos Leonnes Society members, Kath and Terry enjoyed the day as usual, the only downside was they had to quickly return to work.  Kath also had a fab day with her putting, which was of an exceptional standard.
(For those avid golfers who might like to play in the Dos L
eones Scoiety, just pop in, you’ll be made more than welcome.
Having completed the course, the group retruned to the bar and enjoyed a chicken and chips meal and a rather exception social event, not only was the golf discussed at great length, but the economic world climate and recession-busting sessions were also apparent by the end of the evening.
The after-golf shenannagens, needless to say, lasted well into the small hours and the ever-present problem of tattered moods was more than apparent the following day.

Orquidea Society Tests Out Calanova

Posted by La Orquidea Golf Society. Friday, September 4, 2009.

Four members of the Bar La Orquidea Golf Society played Calanova on Monday the 31st of August.

The 18th Green at Calanova Golf Course.

The 18th Green at Calanova Golf Course.

On an exceptionally hot day, all four found the course to be challenging and enjoyable. It is intended to use this course for future Society Meetings.

The course was in good condition, although to walk it, would require the stamina of a tri-athlete (and your own caddie).

Degrees of difficulty were high ranging. The putting greens were in fantastic condition and running fast.

Shade was hardly available. This was probably the only problem, playing this course at this timer of year.

The staff of the course were welcoming, friendly and informative. The booking system was great and the buggies were in excellent condition.

A drinks trolley was on the course throughout the day (needed, big time!).

Having completed the course, we enjoyed a drink and some great food back at the Club House.

We certainly recommend this course to any golfer coming to Southern Spain.

As a result of this visit, it is our intention to use this course in our forthcoming all inclusive Golf Holiday Packages. Click back for more information, or leave your name and address on the site.

Rumble at La Siesta.

Posted by La Orquidea Golf Society. Friday, August 21, 2009.

Yet another great day’s golf at La Siesta.  Playing on a particularly warm and sunny day, everyone played well.  Once again, some great scores came in – we almost had a hole in one.  How expensive would that have been?!

La Siesta Golf Course, Calahonda, Costa del Sol.

The course was in fabulous condition, so good that we’re going back next month (Wednesday the 16th of September, if you’re interested).

The Chaderton family from Liverpool took most of the honours.  Regular visitors to Resort La Orquidea, they took first and second places and the ‘nearest the pin’ title.

Third place went to the only woman player on the day, Jane Sax.  It was Jane’s third time running in the top three – watch out lads!

Fab Shots

A cracking bunker shot from Shaun.

Outstanding! Just one inch off.

This month saw some wonderful shots (and we have the photos to prove it).

Mark Chaderton had easilly the best shot with his nearest the pin, just one inch from the hole.

Shaun Collinson had the bunker shot of the day.  From bunker to one foot from the hole (an 18 foot shot), and he’s a beginner!

Terry “Tiger” McGrath put his T-Shot on the green, two holes later, chipping in from the rough for a birdie – that’s his handicap coming down.

Funniest shot of the day goes to Steve Ravenscroft who, on his first T-Shot, sent the ball whizzing onto the 9th fairway, leaving him further away than when he started.  Oh well, that’s golf.

Ian and KarenAfter the game, everyone returned to the bar for lunch and a few well-deserved drinks.  We reviewed the highs and lows of the day and took a look at some of the better photos from our very own resident photographers, Ian and Karen.

All players commented on the high standards of the day, the food (roast chicken) and the great value, all round.

Once again, we made a few new friends and more than a couple booked themselves up for next year.

If you would like to join us next time – 16th September – get in touch.  We promise you won’t be disappointed!

This months winner was ‘Irish’ Joe, playing on his home course, with a fab score of 44.

Not wanting to be left out, in 2nd place was Jane Sax, the only lady player this meeting (come on girls!!!).

The prizes included a Hand Crafted winners  trophy, and bottles of wine.

The youngest player Courteny ‘Kid’ Ravenscroft, won Longest Drive with Geoff (too close to call!).

Nearest Pin was won by ‘Father’ Don and keeping the ladies end up, Jane Sax.

On a hotter than normal July day, the players enjoyed the cold water & beer provided to go round the course with, returning to the bar for a few more ice cold beers and a bite to eat.

Each player had there own stoy of  ‘If only’ (as usual).  Some of the best included;
‘My 18 feet put missed by 2 inches, would of been a Birdie.’
‘The wind held me back from longest drive.’
‘The bunker got in the way.’

Trick shots where also there as usual, Ricky hit the same Pylon 3 times on successive shots (that deserves a prize in itself).

‘The Les’ parked his ball behind a tree on a 1 in 10 graded slop (hill), so no points there then!
